SEO in Ely, Cambridgeshire

Get found by the people already searching for what you do.

I’ve been doing SEO alongside web design since 2001, so the audit comes from someone who has built the sites as well as ranked them. Most local businesses land between £450 and £1,500 a month, depending on how competitive your searches are. It starts with a free 20-minute call and an honest look at where you stand now, then a written plan at a fixed monthly price.

Three things you can count on

  • You deal with me, start to finish.
  • A plain-English report every month.
  • You own everything: the site, the content, the accounts.

What you get

Seven things, every month, all done by me.

SEO is a habit rather than a one-off fix. So the monthly price covers the technical side, the words and the local work together, and you can see all of it in the report.

If your site needs fixing before any of this makes sense, I’ll say so first.

i.An honest audit firstBefore anything is changed I look at the technical health, the pages, the links and the local listings, and write up what is broken, what is average and what is already working for you. You get the list in plain English with the priorities in order.
ii.Technical housekeepingSite speed, crawl errors, sitemaps, schema and redirects. The plumbing has to work before anything else pays off, and most sites I see have something quietly broken here.
iii.Keyword researchA map of what your customers actually type, including the long, specific searches with fewer people looking and a much better chance of them buying.
iv.On-page workTitles, descriptions, headings, internal links and image text, edited carefully so the pages read well and match the searches. Rewrites only where they earn their place.
v.Local SEO and your Google Business ProfileYour profile set up properly, citations across UK directories, review prompts, local schema and location pages where they make sense. For most local businesses this is the biggest lever, and the one most often left alone.
vi.Content that earns its placeOne useful piece a month, usually a proper answer to a question your customers keep asking. Written to be read, which is also what ranks.
vii.A plain-English reportWhat changed, what stayed the same, where you rank and what comes next. Sent on the first working day of the month, and short enough to read with a coffee.

Ely and Cambridge

Two very different search markets, twenty-five minutes apart.

The work is the same discipline in both, but what wins is not.

In Ely most of the searches that matter are local ones: a plumber, a florist, somewhere to stay by the river. They are won in the map results, which means a properly set up Google Business Profile, consistent listings across the directories and reviews that keep coming, and most Ely businesses have never had any of that done properly. It is unglamorous work and it moves the needle within a few months.

Cambridge is a different game. The same search has consultancies, spin-outs and national firms on the page, so a generic service page won’t cut through. The work there’s specific pages for specific intents, content that answers the questions people in Cambridge are actually asking, and the technical housekeeping that keeps a bigger site fast. There is a separate page on web design in Cambridge if the site itself needs work first.

Either way it’s one person doing it: the same person who audits the site, writes the pages, sets up the tracking and sends you the report on the first working day of the month.

How it works

Four stages, from the audit to holding your ground.

A fixed monthly price and a written plan before any work starts. You always know what was done, what changed and what comes next.

Most sites see meaningful movement three to six months in.

i.

Audit

Weeks 1 to 2

Technical, on-page, links and local, all looked at properly. You get a written report and a priority list, so you can see what needs doing before you commit to a month of it.

ii.

Fix

Month 1

Speed, schema, crawl errors, broken redirects, missing descriptions. Unglamorous work, and the point where a lot of sites get their first lift simply from being tidied up.

iii.

Build

Months 2 to 6

Content, local listings, citations, reviews and internal links, month by month. We pick a small handful of searches that matter to you and earn the right to rank for them.

iv.

Keep and grow

Month 6 onwards

Once you’re ranking, the job is to hold the position and widen it into the searches next door. The same monthly report throughout, and after the first three months it rolls monthly.

Common questions

Before you ask.

The questions that come up on almost every first call about SEO. If yours isn’t here, send it across and I’ll answer plainly.

Still not sure? Drop me a line at enquiries@lordknows.co.uk. I usually reply the same day.
How much does SEO cost?
Most local businesses land between £450 and £1,500 a month. Where yours sits depends on how competitive your searches are and how much writing is needed. There is no setup fee, and the monthly price is fixed in writing before we start. The first three months are a minimum term, because that’s the least it takes to show anything real. After that it rolls monthly.
How long until I see results?
For a healthy site, three to six months for meaningful movement and six to twelve for the harder searches. Anyone promising page one in a few weeks is either guessing or gambling with your domain. The good part is that a position earned this way is hard to shift.
Do I’ve to be near Ely?
No. Most of my clients are in Cambridgeshire, around Ely, Cambridge and Newmarket, and plenty are elsewhere in the UK. Calls happen on Zoom and the report arrives by email. The work is the same wherever you are.
Will you build links?
Yes, real ones. Citations in UK directories, mentions from partners and trade press, and content that earns links because it’s useful. Nothing bought and nothing from link farms, because a bad link does more harm than no link at all.
Can you fix a Google penalty?
Usually, depending on the type. A manual penalty for spammy links needs a disavow file and a reconsideration request. A drop after an algorithm update needs diagnosing first. Either way, you get an honest assessment before any monthly work starts.
Would Google Ads be quicker?
Sometimes, and I run those too. Ads can bring enquiries within weeks, while SEO takes months and then keeps working without the spend. On the first call I’ll tell you which to back first, and sometimes the honest answer is to fix the website before either. There is a separate Google Ads page if you want the detail.
