I, for one, am delighted that new government reforms will reduce the number of pop-up banners on websites asking us to consent to cookies.
I absolutely despise any pop-ups on websites, whether for cookies, newsletter sign-ups or anything else. They are disruptive, and I dread to think how many productive hours are lost each year to people having to accept or decline them. The experience is bad enough on desktop computers, but on mobiles, it makes some websites almost unusable.
I believe people should have complete control over how websites track them and what information they can collect. However, the current pop-ups are making things worse for most people.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) says the government intends to move to an opt-out model of consent for cookies placed by websites. This would mean cookies could be set without seeking approval, but the website must give the web user clear information about how to opt out.
Are you in favour of the new reforms?
