Greenshoots Photography is a headshot and portrait studio based in Cambridge, and when they approached me they had a clear vision: they wanted a brand that felt creative and personal, not like a generic stock photography company. The name itself — ‘Greenshoots’ — has a lovely double meaning, and the branding needed to bring that to life.
The Logo
The Greenshoots logo combines a hand-drawn camera illustration with a small plant sprouting from the lens. It’s a simple concept, but it captures the brand name perfectly — the ‘shoots’ of photography and the ‘green shoots’ of new growth. The hand-drawn style gives it warmth and personality, setting it apart from the clean, geometric logos you see from most photography studios.
Below the icon, the studio name is set in an elegant, widely-spaced serif typeface in all capitals, with ‘PHOTOGRAPHY’ in a lighter weight underneath. The generous letter spacing gives it a gallery-like, premium quality. It’s refined without being pretentious — exactly the balance a headshot studio needs.
The Colour Palette and Feel
The branding is deliberately restrained on colour. The logo is white, designed to sit on dark or photographic backgrounds where the studio’s own work takes centre stage. This was a conscious choice — when your product is visual, the branding needs to support the imagery, not compete with it.
The overall palette across the website is moody and atmospheric: deep, dark backgrounds that make the portrait photography absolutely pop. Warm tones from the photography itself provide all the colour the brand needs. It feels like walking into an upmarket gallery, which is exactly the experience Greenshoots wants their clients to have.
The Result
The brand identity works seamlessly across the website at greenshoots.photography and would translate beautifully to business cards, studio signage, and social media. The hand-drawn camera icon is distinctive enough to work as a standalone mark at small sizes, while the full logo with the serif text has presence at larger scales.
