A website that explains complicated work to the people who need to understand it.

Research projects, societies and education programmes have a lot to say and several audiences to say it to. I’ve built websites for joint research projects between the NHS and the University of Cambridge, the Blood and Transplant Research Unit, the Surgical Research Society and the Tropical Agriculture Association International, and the job is always the same: make the important things easy to find. Fixed prices in writing, from £1,700.

  • Clear for the public, detailed enough for specialists.
  • Members, events, publications and news in one place.
  • Accessible, fast and easy for your team to update.

Several audiences, one website, no confusion.

A research or education website is read by funders, members, students, the public and the press, each looking for something different.

Over the years I’ve worked on websites for joint research projects between the NHS and the University of Cambridge, and for the Blood and Transplant Research Unit. The job is the same each time: explain the work clearly to a general reader, then give the specialist everything they came for, without making either of them dig.

For learned societies, the website is also how the organisation runs. The Surgical Research Society, active for more than 70 years, runs its memberships and the ticket sales for its meetings through the website I built. The Tropical Agriculture Association International, a global network of agricultural professionals founded in 1979, uses its website for joining, member logins and member profiles, and I keep its membership system up to date.

Education charities need reach. Racing to School runs free outdoor learning events at racing venues for schools, and its website lets teachers find out about the programmes and get in touch to arrange a visit.

The Surgical Research Society runs its memberships and meeting ticket sales through its website.

Three things that make this work for education and research.

Clarity for the reader, control for your team, and nobody left out.

  • Plain English first.

Every page leads with what a general reader needs, then goes deeper for specialists. Turning technical writing into clear writing is half the job, and I do it with you.

  • Built to be maintained.

News, events, publications and people pages your team can update safely in WordPress, with a 30-minute walk-through and a one-page guide.

  • Accessible by design.

Readable contrast, proper headings, descriptive links and forms that work with a keyboard, because public bodies and their audiences expect it.

Research, societies and education I’ve worked with.

Some of these I built directly for the organisation. Others were research projects I worked on, which is why not all of them appear in the portfolio.

What an education or research website from me includes.

Every project is quoted to the job, but these are the parts most need.

If your organisation has its own brand or IT rules, I work within them.

  • Pages for each audience

Clear routes for the public, members, students, funders and the press.

  • Publications and resources

Papers, reports and downloads that are easy to find and share.

  • Events and meetings

Listings, registration and ticket sales for conferences, meetings and open days.

  • Memberships

Join, renew and log in online, with member profiles where they help.

  • People and projects

Team, project and partner pages your own staff can keep up to date.

  • Found by the right readers

Proper titles, structure and schema, so your work is found by the people looking for it.

  • Care, so it stays safe

Hosting, backups, security, updates and small changes from £87 a month.

Four steps that fit a procurement process.

A written proposal within two working days of our first call, a fixed price, references on request, and purchase orders with 30-day terms if you need them.

About four weeks from the first call to launch, six for an online shop. The honest variable is how quickly words and photos come back.

  1. Talk

    30 minutes, free

A call about what you do, who the website is for, what it has to do and what isn’t working now.

  2. Quote

    Week 1

A written proposal within two working days: a fixed price and a timeline. Sign it or sleep on it, no obligation. No hourly billing, ever.

  3. Build

    Weeks 2 to 3

I design and build, and you see it taking shape and say what you think. Short email check-ins, no project portal.

  4. Launch and care

    From launch

We go live, I show you the ropes in 30 minutes, and the care plan keeps it fast, safe and found from then on.

Education and research websites, plainly answered.

The questions people ask on the first call. If yours isn’t here, send it over and I’ll answer it straight.

Easier to talk than type? Book a 30-minute call for a time that suits you.
How much does an education or research website cost?
Websites start from £1,700 with your own words and images, and larger sites with memberships, publications or event booking are quoted to the job. Bespoke features start from £1,800. The price is fixed in writing after a free 30-minute call, which suits budget holders.
Can you work with our procurement process?
Yes. You get a written proposal within two working days of the first call and a fixed price, and if your organisation needs a purchase order number on the invoice and 30-day terms, that’s fine.
Can members join and pay online?
Yes. The Surgical Research Society runs its memberships and ticket sales through its website, and the Tropical Agriculture Association International website handles joining, member logins and member profiles.
Will our staff be able to update it?
Yes. WordPress is set up so news, events, publications and people pages are safe for anyone to update, with a 30-minute walk-through and a one-page guide to keep.
Do you only work with organisations in Cambridge?
No. Many research and education clients are in and around Cambridge, but I work with organisations across the UK by video call, and the Tropical Agriculture Association International is a global network.

Make the work easy to find.

Thirty minutes on a call, no obligation. Or send a message about your organisation and who the website is for, and I’ll come back the same day, Monday to Friday.

One small ask. Have a think about who the website is most for: members, the public, funders or students. It decides what goes on the front page.

Tell me about your project.

A few lines is plenty: what you do, what is frustrating you about your current site, and what you’re hoping for. No jargon required. I read every message myself.
